Alumni Advice: Life Tips For Makerere University Freshers

Well being a proud alumnus (Class of 2011) kindly allow me to give my 2 cents.

Tip 1: Focus on your studies. There is a reason why it is called CGPA (Cummulative Grade Points Average) what you get in the first semester determines what you get in the last.

Tip 2: Budget your finances as this will help you track all your expenses. Buy only what you need and not what you want or what your friends think you should buy. (Live within your means)

Tip 3: Eat healthy and exercise. I used to live in Helican Hostel in Kikumi Kikumi and always did my lunch in Livingstone, there is a lady who always prepared a decent meal.

Tip 4: Make a lot of friends as you can, at this stage they are among the last friends you will have but don’t let them negatively influence you. Study with the “bookworms” and go out with the party people when you can afford to but remember everything in moderation.

Tip 5: Avoid multiple relationships as this only leads to multiple issues. In my time I had classmates who juggled girlfriends and only ended up broke as it becomes costly.

Tip 6: Control your social media presence. Go offline when in class. Try not to post as frequently as possible as this only attracts attention which then becomes a distraction.

Tip 7: If you can, spend some weekends at home with family as this will help you save as well as bond.

Tip 8: Get a passport, it’s easier to get a passport when in Uni as a student compared to chasing one when not, I got mine at about the same time. You never really know when it will come in handy.

Tip 9: Make it a habit to always go for “discos” and this doesn’t mean partying or nightlife but discussions in relation to studies. You get to understand a lot from them. This way I avoided retakes.

Tip 10: Use the library as frequently as you can, it’s quite peaceful you will easily develop a habit of reading when you frequent the lib.

Tip 11: Sit at the front of the class, there is nothing wrong with being one of “them”. At the front you are literally forced to pay attention. This allows you to ask a lot of questions that leads to better understanding.

Tip 12: Stay humble, by that I mean try not to seek so much attention, i.e Owning the latest this! Driving the coolest ride! Having the coolest phone! Have the newest or coolest clothes.. living in the coolest hostel etc.. it’s a pointles, endless cycle of consumerism.

Tip 13: Keep your moral compass functional. Uni is when peer pressure is at its peak. You will be tested, tempted and even castigated but remember to always stay true. Avoid unprotected sex if you ever consider having sex. Avoid binge drinking as it can easily become a habit.. if you are tempted to drink, make sure you do so in moderation also drink a lot of water after heavy drinking.

Tip 14: Get an HIV, Hep B,C and all the necessary tests and vaccines as it’s crucial to know your status and protect yourself.

Tip 15: Take a lot of snaps and make a lot of memories. They will make you smile some day. As it is the youngest you will ever be and the oldest you were.

Tip 16: My final tip is Live your life.. make sure you are always happy and make it a routine to laugh daily. Watch a comedy series or memes that will keep you smiling. It’s noted that when your laugh each day, your life is extended by a day.

All the best.. ee Makerere Oyee!
